Other Progress and Plans

This past year we have completed a 40 x 80-foot pavilion, started a wonderful interpretive trail system, obtained the necessary permits to install sewer and water facilities on the property, have drilled a water well (that produces approximately 8 gallons per minute), and have sponsored a series of well attended environmental education workshops. We've had a record number of groups and individuals utilize the Mill Cove Environmental Area for hiking, fishing, hunting, and environmental training. And again in 2012, we will be hosting the return of the NRA-Youth Hunter Educational Challenge during the last two weeks in July.

Generous Support
Mill Cove has recently received very generous support for the Environmental Center from three Tioga County Foundations: The Horace B. Packer Foundation-$25,000; The Albert S. & Mary G. Krieger Foundation-$21,000; and the Earl W. and Ina G. Tabor Foundation-$20,000.

The 250-acre Mill Cove Environmental Area in Tioga County showcases North Central Pennsylvania’s beautiful landscape, with sweeping views, lush vegetation, a thriving trout stream, and abundant wildlife. Mill Cove borders two million acres of public land, including Pennsylvania WILDS, State Game Lands, and the Tioga Reservoir. It is a peaceful and inspiring location for those who treasure the outdoors.

Mill Cove welcomes group outdoor events such as target shooting competitions and Boy Scout and Girl Scout camping retreats. Environmental and biology classes at nearby Mansfield University use the site as an outdoor laboratory and learning center.

The Mill Cove Environmental Area is owned by the Army Corps of Engineers and leased by Mill Cove, Inc., a nonprofit corporation formed to enhance the area for recreational and environmental education purposes.  Future plans call for the addition of an Environmental Education Center along with restrooms, campsites, improved driveway and parking facilities, trails, shooting ranges, and canoe and boating facilities.

"As an educator and outdoorsman, the promise and possibilities of the Mill Cove Environmental Area inspired me to join its Board of Directors. Now 10 years later, I am more passionate than ever about our project and its value to the environment and the future of the area."

Chairman, Mill Cove, Inc.
